26th to 30th October 2005

"When people ask me what part of filmmaking I like best, I always tell them "Going to the film festivals". When I´m thinking about film festivals, I always think of Hof..."
Jack Sholder

From October 26th to 30th, we will once again present a varied programme selected by Heinz Badewitz that encompasses German as well as international productions. Like every year in autumn, the city of Hof turns into a “melting pot” of encounters, discussions, emotions, and late nights.

To give you a first impression of our programme:

We’re very happy that, after a few years’ absense, the French cinema is returning to Hof with films such as "Gabrielle" by Patrice Chereau and "Lemming" by Dominik Moll which opened this year’s festival in Cannes. The actor Melvil Poupaud will present François Ozon’s "Le Temps qui reste" and, a first in Germany, show three of his own shorts. Our guests will also include Michael Caton-Jones with his new movie "Shooting Dogs", James Toback with "When I will be loved", Atom Egoyan with "Where the Truth lies" and Paul Sletaune with "Next Door". German productions are, among others, Werner Herzog’s "The wild blue Yonder", Andreas Dresen’s latest film, "Sommer vorm Balkon", Aelrun Goette’s first feature "Unter dem Eis" – in 2003, the director had presented her impressive documentation "Die Kinder sind tot" in Hof – as well as "Im Schwitzkasten" by Eoin Moore and Spiro Taraviras’s documentation "Buzz" about the legendary 40’s and 50’s Hollywood script writer 'Buzz' Bezzerides. Furthermore, Veit Helmer will be coming to Hof with his new film "Behind the Couch – Casting in Hollywood", and Stanislav Mucha, now living in Hof, will present "Reality Shock". The young German director Neele Vollmar will show her first full-length feature film, "Urlaub vom Leben".

Of course there will also be films from New Zealand, Canada, the States and the UK as well as Austrian and Swiss films about which we will inform you in more detail shortly.

This year’s retrospective is dedicated to Costa-Gavras who will not only present a selecton of his earlier films but also his latest production, "Le Couperet", starring José Garcia and Ulrich Tukur.

Apart from the usual prizes that are awarded in Hof – the "Film Award of the City of Hof", the "Eastman Award", presented by Kodak, the "Award for Best Set“, awarded by the association of set designers, film architects and costume designers, S/F/K, and the "Award for Visual Film Review", awarded to a film journalist by the magazine Film & TV Kameramann, bvkamera and the association of German film review – this year will see the first “German Film Award”, presented jointly by HypoVereinsbank, Bavaria Film and Bayerischer Rundfunk. With this award, the initiators emphasize their support for young talents in German film. The "German Film Award Hof" includes prize money of 10.000 Euro and is awarded by an independent jury for an exceptional artistic effort.

The Hof International Film Festival is supported by Arte Germany as main sponsor, HypoVereinsbank, Munich, and the business initiative Hochfranken as well as many other institutions whom we would all like to thank.
